How environments, media, and machines can lower the human nervous system’s cost of living.
The question
Environments, media, and machines all tax the human nervous system. How can they be designed to lower its cost of living instead?
What is at stake
Every room, feed and device sets a price in attention, arousal and recovery, and nobody is keeping the account. The price is paid unevenly — it falls hardest on nervous systems that were already spending more — and because it is invisible it is never traded off against anything. Making it visible is most of the work.
Why it is ours
The sensory dimension of neurodivergent experience makes this cost visible to us where others average it away.
We are building ambient and media systems designed around nervous-system load — sound, light, pacing, and interruption as materials with a measurable human price.
How we work on it

Name the price.
Sound, light, motion, pacing and interruption are treated as materials with a cost, and a design states what it is spending.

Recovery is part of the design.
What a person is like an hour after an experience is as much the product as what they were like during it.

Ambient by default.
Most of what a system does should be perceivable without being attended to. Demanding attention is an expense, and it should be argued for.

Design for the expensive nervous system.
Build for the person for whom the room is already loud, and the room gets cheaper for everyone in it.
What would count as an answer
A program is not finished when it produces results. It is finished when these are true, and can be shown to be true by someone who did not run it.
- A design can state its sensory cost, and an independent measure agrees.
- Lowering load does not cost the information the design was carrying.
- People report the hour after, not just the moment during, as better.
- The quiet version is the one that ships as the default.

- Design
- Recovery is measured after equivalent tasks delivered at different sensory intensities, with the measurement taken well after the task ends rather than during it.
- What it would read
- Whether experiences that test the same during turn out to differ sharply afterwards — and whether the difference is large enough to be worth designing against.

Interruption pricing
- Design
- Notifications and ambient cues are given an explicit cost, and a system is held to a fixed budget of them per hour.
- What it would read
- What a system chooses to say when it cannot say everything. A budget forces a design to rank its own interruptions, which most never do.

The loud room
- Design
- An environment is tuned for the most sensory-sensitive person present and then evaluated by everyone else.
- What it would read
- Whether designing for the expensive nervous system produces a room the rest of the household prefers. If it does, sensory design stops being a special case.
Terms this program uses
- Sensory load
- The demand an environment or interface places on a nervous system — sound, light, motion, simultaneity, interruption — treated as a quantity a design spends rather than a preference a person is asked to tolerate.
- Ambient system
- A system most of whose output can be perceived without being attended to. Demanding attention is treated as an expense the system has to justify, against a fixed budget rather than on the merits of each interruption.
- Recovery cost
- What an experience costs after it ends: the time and capacity a person needs before they are able to do the next thing. Two experiences that feel identical during can differ sharply here, and only one of those differences shows up in a session metric.
